Shilla Illiasu urges local based players to strive hard for a move abroad

Former Asante Kotoko defender Shilla Illiasu has urged local based players to do their possible best to earn a move outside the country.

The tough-tackling defender having moved from Kumasi Asante Kotoko to Russian side FC Saturn is quite cognizant of the benefits of joining a team abroad.

He joined FC Saturn in the year 2006 after his impressive performances in the FIFA World Cup that same year.

For the 37-year old,a move abroad should be a priority for local based players, he concedes that one cannot accumulate much wealth with the meagre salaries they receive in the domestic league.

Speaking to Asempa FM,
“The truth is one, in Ghana football you can never earn the money that these players are earning (abroad) even if you play 100 years in Ghana” he said.

“Because the Ghana League money is hand to mouth, if you want to build in Accra, Kumasi or even Tamale, your signing on fee from any team in Ghana, Kotoko, Hearts cannot even build any proper house”.

“So to me I will advise that, while playing in Ghana you pray that at least you get a better deal abroad in 2-3 years, so that you make money

“seriously in Ghana its just the fame, you will just enjoy media hype but at the end of the day, you’ll not make money” he added.
