Ralf Rangnick explains Man Utd’s corner struggles

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has attempted to explain why the Red Devils are among Europe’s worst sides when it comes to scoring from corners.

United have taken 114 corners in the Premier League so far this season but haven’t scored as a result of any of them – their last goal from a corner came in March 2021, when West Ham’s Craig Dawson put the ball in his own net.

Ahead of their meeting with the Hammers again on Saturday, Rangnick was asked about United’s set piece woes, and admitted the situation was ‘a little bit weird’.

“In the end, this is a question of training time but is also a question of deliveries,” Rangnick said. “And this is really a little bit weird to be honest, because we have players who should be technically able to deliver the balls in the right way.

“But we still have to work on that and we still need to improve in those areas. At least we scored a goal after a free-kick against Villa. The first goal at Villa Park was after a free-kick, but I fully agree we haven’t conceded as yet in the last weeks and months but we should also be more dangerous and more effective on set-pieces ourselves.

“It’s a question of training but it’s also a question of quality of deliveries even more so when it’s free-kicks from the side.”

Man Utd can leapfrog West Ham and break into the top four with a win on Saturday, and will remain there over the international break if Tottenham and Arsenal fail to win their respective matches on Sunday.
