Newcastle pull out of Hugo Ekitike move

Newcastle have pulled away from their move to sign Reims starlet Hugo Ekitike.

90min revealed earlier on deadline day that the Magpies were working hard to finalise a deal for the 19-year-old, who has scored eight goals and provided two assists in 18 Ligue 1 appearances so far this season.

However, we understand despite Newcastle and Reims agreeing terms for a transfer on Sunday, the deal has fallen through. The teenager and his representatives had agreed terms, but they did not feel the move was right at this stage with a quick decision needed on Monday.

Eddie Howe’s had been tracking Ekitike throughout the January transfer window but will now turn to other targets as they look to improve their side for the second half of the season.

Newcastle had wanted to sign Ekitike alongside Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard, who is yet to find a new club this month despite being surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.

A move for England international Lingard is still possible on Monday.

Newcastle have already completed the signings of Bruno Guimaraes, Chris Wood and Kieran Trippier this month, while defender Dan Burn is expected to be brought in from Brighton.
