Leverkusen 0-0 Roma (agg 0-1): Mourinho’s men head into UEL final despite draw

Roma held out under siege for a goalless draw with Bayer Leverkusen, sending them into the Europa League Final thanks to the first leg 1-0 win.

The Giallorossi won the first leg 1-0 thanks to an Edoardo Bove goal and the injury crisis was starting to calm down, with only Marash Kumbulla and Rick Karsdorp out, although Paulo Dybala, Chris Smalling and Stephan El Shaarawy were at best ready for the bench. The hosts lost Robert Andrich and Odilon Kossounou to serious injuries at the Olimpico, joining Patrik Schick on the treatment table.

Lorenzo Pellegrini fired wide early on, but Bayer Leverkusen had a huge chance when Moussa Diaby got away on an inspired slide-rule Florian Wirtz pass and from a tricky angle managed to thump the crossbar, as Roger Ibanez did just enough to make it difficult.

Rui Patricio spilled a Kerem Demirbay strike and Sardar Azmoun failed to make the most of a shaky reaction to the Jeremie Frimpong cross.

Roma lost Leonardo Spinazzola to injury after 34 minutes, while play was briefly halted after the restart for an excessive number of fireworks and flares thrown from the home fans.

Rui Patricio got down for a low one-handed save on the Demirbay daisy-cutter, then Azmoun incredibly drilled wide from 12 yards after a lucky ricochet fell into his path.

Zeki Celik joined the injury list and Lorenzo Pellegrini was limping badly in the final stages, which included eight minutes of stoppages under siege.
