Kobbie Mainoo: Playing for England was my dream

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has expressed his lifelong dream of representing England, despite his proud Ghanaian heritage.

Born to Ghanaian parents in Stockport, Mainoo began his international career with England at the U-17 level and has since progressed through the ranks.

The 19-year-old’s standout performances for Manchester United, including scoring the winning goal in the FA Cup final against Manchester City at Wembley, earned him a spot in the England squad for the European Championship in Germany.

“I’m proud of my Ghanaian heritage, but it has always been a dream to play for England. I’m happy to be here. I considered it, but I want to play for England,” Mainoo stated.

Mainoo made a substitute appearance against Serbia as England kicked off their Euro 2024 campaign with a win. The young midfielder now aims for a starting role in upcoming matches against Denmark and Slovenia.

Mainoo, who made 24 Premier League appearances, scoring three goals and providing one assist, also spoke about the stability brought by Erik ten Hag’s confirmation as Manchester United manager. He emphasized the importance of continuity and his ambitions for more trophies under the Dutchman’s leadership.

“He’s already got two trophies, hopefully, there are more to come,” Mainoo said. “It is nice to have that peace of mind, we know what manager we are going back to in the new season.”

“I’m so grateful to him that he put so much trust in me and believed in me to play in the team and I can’t thank him enough.”

Despite recent efforts by Ghana football officials to recruit him, Mainoo remains committed to his dream of playing for the Three Lions.
