AFCON 2021: Augustine Eguavoen resigns as Super Eagles Interim coach

Interim Head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, Augustine Eguavoen has stepped down from his role following the team’s elimination in the round of 16 at the ongoing AFCON tournament.

The Super Eagles succumbed to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of the Carthage Eagles on Sunday evening.

Eguavoen led the three-time champions to three straight wins in the Group Stage against Egypt, Sudan and Guinea-Bissau, making them the only team at the 2021 edition of the tournament to win all group games.

However, the team fell short against a Covid-stricken Tunisian team to exit the competition in the round of 16.

Speaking after the game, Eguavoen said:

“What happens next is that I’m the interim coach and Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

“I will go back to my position and allow the NFF to make a decision on the way forward”.

The 56-year old took over as an interim coach following the sacking of former manager Gernot Rhor early December last year.

Nigeria will now shift attention to their upcoming World Cup Qualifying match against Ghana’s Black Stars in March.
