‘Physically I Don’t Think I Am Ready’ – Asamoah Gyan Rules Himself Out Of Black Stars Call Up

Former Blackstars captain Asamoah Gyan thinks he is not physically fit to play for the Blackstars as he needs to condition himself well.

According to him, he needs to lose some weight, train hard, and perform consistently at the club level before he can play for the national team again.

“Since I haven’t retired, I think I have to earn the call-up. I have to train and play actively for a club and also perform so that I can get the call-up.

“For me, I think earning the call-up shouldn’t be about the number of goals I have scored in the past. I have to be fit, playing actively for a team before I accept the call-up”.

“It is possible looking at the Roger Milla and what happened, but the most important thing is I think it will all depend on me.

He further added in an interview on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo show that:

‘I have to be fit physically, I think I am naturally gifted and I can do anything on the field but physically I don’t think I am ready.

“I am not fit to play and have to lose some weight, have to be in the right shape to play competitive football but now am not.”

Gyan is the all-time leading goalscorer of the Ghana national team, with 51 goals. He represented Ghana at the 2006, 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups. With 6 goals, he is the top African goalscorer in the history of the World Cup.

Gyan has also represented Ghana at the 2004 Summer Olympics and in seven Africa Cup of Nations in 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019, helping them finish in third-place in 2008 and runner-up in 2010 and 2015.

Ghana are in Group H alongside Portugal, Uruguay and Korea Republic in the Qatar 2022 World Cup which is billed to start in November later this year.
