Asante Kotoko have reportedly parted ways with winger Johnson Oppong, barely two months after his arrival, in a move that underscores the club’s ruthless approach to reshaping their squad ahead of the 2025-26 season.
Oppong joined the Porcupine Warriors earlier this summer amid high expectations, given his wealth of experience both domestically and abroad.
However, he has failed to make the desired impact, prompting the club to end his stay prematurely.
The 27-year-old attacker made his debut in the Toyota Cup against South African giants Kaizer Chiefs but has since struggled for regular minutes.
He was handed a starting role in the GHALCA Top Four clash with Heart of Lions but was left out of the squad altogether in the decisive encounter against Hearts of Oak, further fueling speculation over his future.
Club insiders revealed that management was dissatisfied with his output during training and competitive matches, leading to the decision to part ways.
Oppong previously impressed for Dreams FC during their remarkable CAF Confederation Cup semi-final run and also had spells in Europe with C.S. Maritimo (Portugal), FC ZlÃn (Czech Republic), and KF Kukesi (Albania).
With the transfer window to be closed on August 31, Asante Kotoko are weighing options for the signing of former Ghana U20 star Ibrahim Sulley and Walid Fuseini, formerly of Nsoatreman FC, to bolster their attacking options.
