PSG to be handed Ligue 1 title despite the cancelation of the 2019/2020 campaign

Paris Saint-Germain have been awarded the 2019/2020 Ligue 1 title after the French football governing body decided to call off the rest of the league campaign.

The cancellation of the league became inevitable following the decision by the French authorities to extend the ban on sporting activities until at least early September.

There were uncertainties as to whether a winner would be crowned or they would opt instead to follow the example of Dutch football to not crown a champion at all.

But one of France’s most reputable news outlet L’Équipe has reported that the Parisians have been crowned as league champions with 11 games to go.

PSG were leading the standings ahead of second-placed Marseille with 12 points difference and a game in hand. Having won the league title six times in as many years, it has been deemed appropriate to crown them champions considering the kind of advantage they hold over their rivals.

A decision is yet to be made in regard to promotion and relegations as well as European places for next season with a couple of teams sweating over the uncertainty.
