Not The 2010 World Cup, Asamoah Gyan Reveals His Biggest Regret

Ex-Ghana International Asamoah Gyan says his biggest regret as a Blackstars captain was not taking part in the 2015 AFCON final penalty shootout against Cote d’Ivoire.

Ghana lost 9-8 to the Ivorians in that crucial final in Gabon after a goalless draw game in regulation time.

Then captain Asamoah Gyan opted against taking a penalty and was substituted in the dying embers of the game.

Ghana took the lead in the first two kicks but blew the chance away to their opponent as Cote d’Ivoire clinched their second AFCON trophy from the same opponent in a similar fashion in Senegal 1992.

“As captain, I’ll say it was in 2015 [AFCON] when I asked to be substituted against Ivory Coast in the final.

“I feel like if I was not substituted, I could’ve helped in the penalty shootout. But due to some things that were going on, I felt I needed to give the chance to another player.

He added that: “This was because I had excused myself from taking penalties.

‘But there were a lot of things going on which led to me asking to be substituted. So I say that was one of my biggest regrets as a captain.”
