Not a waste of money’ – GFA defends new technical team additions

The Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has firmly defended the Association’s decision to appoint additional coaches to strengthen the Black Stars’ technical team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Earlier today, the GFA announced that, in consultation with key stakeholders, it had significantly reinforced the Black Stars’ technical setup with the appointment of five highly experienced professionals as part of preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

According to the Association, the strategic additions are aimed at boosting the team’s competitiveness and ensuring a well-balanced technical structure as Ghana prepares for the global showpiece to be hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States of America.

Speaking exclusively on Akoma 87.9 FM, Asante Twum dismissed suggestions that the new appointments amount to a waste of resources, stressing that the decision is driven by quality and expertise rather than numbers.

“When you compare the coaches we have assembled with those of other countries, ours are even fewer in number. This is not about increasing the headcount, but about ensuring we put forward the very best to compete at the highest level,” he said.

He described the criticism surrounding the decision as unfortunate and maintained that the GFA’s focus remains solely on strengthening the national team.

“It is unfortunate for anyone to describe this as a waste of money. That has never been the goal of the FA, and in time, everyone will testify to the impact these additions will have on our progress,” Asante Twum added.

He further emphasized that Ghana’s ambition on the global stage demands the right technical direction and experience.

“Our goal at the World Cup is to make an impact, and we can only achieve that with the best expertise guiding us. We believe these coaches will take us where we want to be,” he stated.

The GFA remains confident that the expanded technical team will provide the Black Stars with the necessary support and expertise to meet their objectives and compete effectively at the highest level of international football.
