Nigeria Sports Minister Sunday Dare has charged Super Eagles to defeat Ghana in the play-off and qualify to the 2022 FIFA World Cup finals in Qatar.
Dare admitted he is aware the team is not happy about their failure to win the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon. Nigeria, the best team in the group phase were shocked in the last 16 stage by Tunisia.
The Minister wants three-time African to “visit the anger” of the second-round exit when they face Ghana in late March. The winner of the two-legged tie is assured of a place in Qatar late this year for the global showpiece.
“I know you are still unhappy about the loss to Tunisia, but I want you to visit the anger of the defeat by Tunisia on Ghana. We all know about the history of the rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana in football, and this is one fixture that we must not lose,” Dare charged the team, as quoted in a publication by the NFF.
The first leg will be played on March 24 at the Cape Coast Stadium, after CAF rejected Ghana’s bid to stage the game at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.
The second leg is slated for March 27 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
