Maiden Democracy Cup Postponed To July 17

The first edition of the Democracy Cup match between Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko has been postponed to Wednesday, July 17, 2024. The game was originally scheduled for this Friday, July 5 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The event, launched on June 13 by the Speaker of Parliament, Right Honorable Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin. Is part of celebrations to mark the 30th anniversary of Ghana’s Parliament. Parliament has not given any reason for the postponement yet.

However, the Communications Director of Hearts of Oak, Kwame Opare Addo, has disclosed that the club received information about Mr. Bagbin’s unavailability on the initial scheduled date.

The winner of the match will play against DC United, in Washington, USA. Before the main match, Members of Parliament will play a curtain-raiser match against the former. Black Stars players to add some extra entertainment to the whole occasion.

During the launch, Mr. Bagbin, a staunch supporter of Asante Kotoko, called for the special Democracy Cup to become an annual event. He added that future editions of the Democracy Cup would include other Ghanaian clubs.

“We want the Democracy Cup to be a regular fixture, promoting not only democracy but also. The role of sport in our national life,” he said.

On the day, The President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA). Kurt Okraku pledged their support and called for increased investment in Ghana’s sports infrastructure and development. Recognizing the broader impact of such initiatives.
