Gambian referee Bakary Papa Gassam retires at the age of 44.

Referee Bakary Papa Gassam of Gambia has announced his retirement from professional football officiating after serving as FIFA referee for 16 years.

Referee Gassam was born on February 10, 1979, in Gambia and gained his FIFA Licence in 2007.

He officiated in the 2012 Olympic tournament and was the fourth official for the Gold Medal match between Mexico and Brazil at the tournament.

He officiated in prestigious tournaments including the African Cup of Nations and 3 World Cup tournaments.

Although the Gambian Football Federation and other individuals have been praising him for his contribution to football his retirement came as an astonishing to everyone.

He will now contribute to the Gambian Division One league till the end of the 2023/24 season.
