Two weeks after the Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced Chris Hughton as the new Black Stars head coach, the 64-year-old is expected to travel to Ghana next week for his unveiling.
The former Newcastle coach has been part of the Ghana national team since March 2022 playing the role of Technical Advisor.
Hughton replaces Otto Addo who resigned after Ghana finished bottom of Group G at the 2022 World Cup.
His unveiling as the new head coach of the four-time Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champions has been delayed due to the death of his father Willie Hughton.
Speaking exclusively to 3 Sports, Communications Director of the GFA, Henry Asante Twum revealed Hughton lost his Ghanaian dad in the UK.
“Chris had to stay in the UK because he lost his dad and needed time with his family and plan the burial service. That’s why he’s not been to Ghana yet.”
The new head coach is expected to arrive in Ghana next week ahead of Ghana’s AFCON qualifier against Angola.
“We expect Chris in Ghana next week if everything goes according to plan. We are constantly engaging on his unveiling, media engagement, and build-up to the games,” Henry added.
According to Henry, the unveiling ceremony of Ghana’s coaches, and the squad announcements for the Angola doubleheader are also expected to be made.
“He is working, Chris and his assistants will be unveiled together. When he arrives we will communicate the date and venue for his unveiling and then use that as part of the build-up to the game against Angola. There will also be squad announcements, details of the contract, and the targets set for the new technical team.”
