Brentford have offered free agent Christian Eriksen a six-month contract with the option of a further year.
The Denmark international recently left Inter, as Serie A rules do not allow players to play with implantable cardioverter defibrillators fitted. Eriksen needed one after suffering a cardiac arrest during Euro 2020 – he hasn’t played since.
The Athletic claim a contract offer of six months with the option of a further year has been put to Eriksen, who is targeting a place in Denmark’s squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar later this year.
90min understands Brentford are leading the race for his signature, though Crystal Palace and Championship leaders Fulham have also spoken to the former Tottenham midfielder.
If Eriksen decided to join Brentford, he would encounter a strong Danish contingent. Thomas Frank previously coached Eriksen at youth level, while Christian Norgaard, Mathias Jensen, Mathias Jorgensen, Mads Bidstrup, Mads Bech Sorensen, Mads Roerslev, Luka Racic and Jonas Lossl all play their football in west London.
It would also represent a return to the Premier League. Eriksen played over 300 games for Tottenham and was widely regarded as one of the division’s best playmakers. He helped Spurs reach the Champions League final in 2019 before joining Inter just over a year later.
He was coached by Antonio Conte – Spurs’ current boss – at San Siro, reaching the Europa League final and winning Serie A before his contract was terminated by mutual consent.
Brentford are yet to make any winter signings as they look to avoid relegation. The Bees are ten points above the drop zone but have lost four of their last five Premier League games, with their latest defeat coming at Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.
