Black Princesses drawn in tricky group for 2024 U-20 Women’s World Cup

The Black Princesses of Ghana have been drawn against 2018 champions Japan, 2014 quarter-finalists New Zealand, and Austria in Group E of the 2024 U-20 Women’s World Cup, which will be held in Colombia.

The draw for the expanded 24-team tournament took place in Bogota on Wednesday, June 5, 2024.

Ghana, making their seventh successive appearance at the World Cup, faces a challenging path in Group E where Japan, 2018 champions stand in their way posing as a formidable force with a history of strong performances. Having reached the quarter-finals in 2014, New Zealand, are another tough opponent Ghana will rub shoulders with while Austria’s presence adds to the tricky dynamics of the group.

Yusif Basigi’s Black Princesses secured their place in the U-20 Women’s World Cup in January with a dominant 7-1 aggregate victory over Senegal in the final round of qualifiers. The team has been in excellent form since, also winning the women’s football competition at the 2023 African Games.

Ghana is joined by Nigeria, Cameroon, and Morocco as Africa’s representatives in this year’s U-20 Women’s World Cup.  are as follows:

Group B: France, Canada, Brazil, Fiji

Group C: Spain, USA, Paraguay, Morocco

Group D: Germany, Venezuela, Nigeria, Korea Republic

Group E: Japan, New Zealand, Ghana, Austria

Group F: Korea DPR, Argentina, Costa Rica, Netherlands

The tournament is scheduled to take place from August 31 to September 22, 2024. The Black Princesses will be looking to leverage their recent successes and strong form to advance beyond the group stage for the first time.
