Anthony Martial to undergo medical ahead of Sevilla loan

Manchester United forward Anthony Martial will fly to Spain to undergo a medical with Sevilla, with a loan move now agreed in principle.

90min understands that the Frenchman, whose wish to leave Old Trafford has been confirmed by both his agent and interim United boss Ralf Rangnick, will join for the remainder of the season after agreeing to reduce his wages, but the move will not include an option to buy.

Martial had also been of interest to Juventus, but he’s chosen to continue his career in La Liga as Sevilla bid to win their first La Liga title since 1945. An official announcement could be made as early as Tuesday afternoon.

Managed by Julen Lopetegui, who has been tentatively linked with succeeding Rangnick as Manchester United’s permanent boss, the Andalusians are just four points off the top of La Liga, while they’re also still in with a chance of winning a record seventh Europa League crown.

They have lost just twice in 22 La Liga outings this season and have the best defensive record in the league, conceding only 16 times to date.

In Martial, Sevilla will pick up a player who has struggled for form and confidence after an impressive 2019/20 campaign saw him score 23 goals, but also one who can be electrifyingly good when on song.

The 26-year-old has been in and out of United’s side this season, rotating between playing up front and wide left when he has had an opportunity to shine, and has just 11 appearances and a solitary goal to his name.

Martial’s overall record for United makes for far greater reading, although his goal return of 79 strikes in 269 appearances is perhaps not the strike rate many envisaged he would deliver after joining for an initial £36m fee, potentially rising to £58m.

His contract at United runs until 2024, though the club do hold the option to extend by a year.
