Alexia Putellas wins The Best FIFA Women’s Player award for 2021

Alexia Putellas has followed up on her Ballon d’Or Feminin award by winning The FIFA Best Women’s Player gong for 2021.

The Spanish forward has enjoyed a hugely successful year, winning the treble with club side Barcelona.

Putellas ended the 2020/21 campaign with 26 goals in 42 games and has 17 in 19 so far this term, and was honoured by FIFA with The Best Women’s Player award on Monday.

“I’m very happy, I’m thrilled. I would like to thank all my teammates and also congratulate them because this award is for all of us. This award will make us play with the same motivation for this year and I hope we have great success again this year.

“I think that in Spain we have a lot of talent. What we needed was to work more and time, because this was not the result of a few months, it’s the result of a lot of years of work.

“We had this hope that we would become the best players in the world. We are doing a great job and hope it will not stop year, that it’ll continue for many years to come.”

When asked about her success with Barcelona, Putellas added: “I think at the end of the day, it’s the result of a few years. We have been very successful as a team, we won the Champions League, we are very happy, I hope we will have the same success this year.”
