AFCON 2021; Burkina Faso snatch automatic qualification in stalemate

 

Burkina Faso secured a place in the knockout phases of the competition despite being held to a 1-1 draw by Ethiopia.

The Stallions knew they had to avoid defeat against Ethiopia and they would keep their tournament hopes alive.

The Stallions raced into an early lead to kind courtesy of a Cyrille Bayala strike in the 25th minute.

The forward’s strike gave the Stallions the foundation to build on and they held onto their lead going into recess.

Ethiopia however were handed a lifeline after Steeve Yago handled the ball in the penalty area. Captain of the Walias, Getaneh Kebede, stepped up and converted the spot-kick to give Ethiopia the leveler.

Both sides had chances to score the winner late on in the game. but neither side could find the breakthrough.

Burkina Faso go through as runners up in Group A on head-to-head rule ahead of Cape Verde whom they beat, with both teams having 4 points.
