Nobody can tell me what to do” – Kotoko coach Karim Zito defends style

Asante Kotoko head coach Karim Zito has responded with unwavering confidence to recent criticism surrounding his training methods, declaring that his expertise and proven track record speak louder than public opinion.

Speaking to the media following his return from South Africa, where Kotoko triumphed in the 2025 Toyota Cup, the veteran tactician was emphatic in defending his approach, emphasizing that no external pressure will sway his professional decisions.

“Nobody can tell me what to do,” Zito said bluntly. “I’m a qualified coach. I’ve been to Europe more than 11 times to study and improve myself. In Ghana and across Africa, I hold some of the highest coaching certifications available,  that’s why I’m here, and I won’t be dictated to by voices outside the team.”

The remarks come amid scrutiny from some sections of the Kotoko fanbase, who have questioned his training philosophy and pre-season regimen. But Zito was unshaken, laying out the rationale behind his methodology with clarity and conviction.

According to him, his coaching philosophy is built on a solid foundation of physical and psychological preparation, prioritizing player readiness over public sentiment.

“If I’m taking them through the ranks, we can’t play this game. You must start with adaptation, then move to the physical aspect, before going into techniques and tactics,” he explained.

Zito also revealed that his pre-season training is not arbitrary, but carefully calibrated to match the specific strengths, conditions, and limitations of the current squad.

“At the training ground, I did what the players could handle. I know the kind of players I’m working with. Pre-season is not about impressing anyone outside, it’s about preparing the team for battle. That’s why I did it my way.”

Critics may question his style, but the results are difficult to ignore.

Earlier this year, Zito guided Asante Kotoko to their 10th MTN FA Cup title, reasserting the club’s domestic dominance. Over the weekend, he led the Porcupine Warriors to international glory, defeating South African giants Kaizer Chiefs in a tense penalty shootout to win the 2025 Toyota Cup in Durban.

These back-to-back successes under his leadership have reaffirmed his credentials and silenced many doubters, at least for now.

As the focus shifts toward the new season, Zito is already laying the groundwork. Kotoko are set to begin pre-season camp on Wednesday in Cape Coast, where the next chapter in the club’s journey will begin  on his terms.
