Following the game, Uruguay players explained that their actions were motivated by a need to protect their families. The match itself saw Colombia secure a 1-0 victory over Uruguay, with Jefferson Lerma scoring the decisive goal in the first half. Despite playing with 10 men after Dani Munoz was sent off in first-half stoppage time, Colombia managed to hold on to their lead. They are set to face Argentina in the final on Monday.
Luis Suarez acknowledged the players’ instinct to defend their loved ones but also recognized that their behavior cast a negative light on the situation.
