Cristiano Ronaldo has hinted at continuing his international career with Portugal despite their disappointing exit from Euro 2024.
Ronaldo, who started in all five of Portugal’s games in the tournament, averaged 97 minutes per match but, for the first time in his career, failed to score in open play at a major international tournament.
Following the team’s 5-3 defeat to France on penalties in the quarterfinals, the Portugal captain took to social media, expressing gratitude and determination: “We wanted more. We deserved more. For us. For each one of you. For Portugal. We are grateful for everything you have given us and for everything we have achieved so far. On and off the field, I am sure that this legacy will be honoured and will continue to be built. Together.”

Portugal’s coach Roberto Martínez commented after their elimination that it was “too soon” to determine if Cristiano Ronaldo had played his last game for the national team. Since debuting in 2003, Ronaldo has scored 130 goals in 212 appearances for Portugal and won Euro 2016.
Despite suggesting that this record-breaking sixth European Championship might be his last, it remains uncertain whether the five-time Ballon d’Or winner will continue playing through the 2026 World Cup when he would be 41.
Portugal will return to action on September 5th, facing Croatia in their Group A opener of the UEFA Nations League.
