Al Ahly Claims Historic Spot in New FIFA Intercontinental Cup

Al Ahly

Al Ahly have become the first African team to qualify for the newly formed FIFA Intercontinental Cup.

This comes after the Egyptian football powerhouse defeated Esperance de Tunis 1-0 on aggregate in the 2023/24 CAF Champions League final.

Al Ahly, who have won the CAF Champions League a record 12 times, will also compete in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup to be staged in the USA.

The world football governing body issued the following indicating that the Egyptian giants had become the third team to qualify for the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.

“Al Ahly have become the third side to book their spot at the maiden Coupe Intercontinentale de la FIFA™ (FIFA Intercontinental Cup), following the successful qualification of both Auckland City and Al Ain earlier in the day,” a FIFA statement read.

“The brand-new annual tournament will feature the champion side from each premier club competition across FIFA’s six confederations. The inaugural edition will be played later this year, with the final in December, at a neutral venue that will be announced at a later date.”
