Former Ghana winger Laryea Kingston has urged the Black Stars to exercise caution before calling up Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo. While praising Mainoo’s talent, Kingston emphasizes the need for careful assessment before extending an invitation.
“You have to look at the way Manchester United is using him, then you assess the team that we have now and whether he can fit in or not’’ cautioned Laryea Kingston, currently the assistant coach for Ghana’s U-17 team.
He cited Spain as an example, where some talented players get overlooked for the national team due to stylistic differences.
This advice comes amidst interest in Mainoo from both England and Ghana. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) sees him as a promising addition, with GFA Executive Council member Randy Abbey stating, “Mainoo is one of the talented youngsters we’re interested in.”
Mainoo has impressed since joining Manchester United’s senior team in 2023, scoring two goals in 16 games across all competitions. While he represented England at the youth level, he remains uncapped for the senior team. This opens the door for Ghana, but the decision ultimately lies with Mainoo
