Ghana defender Dennis Odoi has sounded a note of cautious optimism ahead of the Black Stars’ crunch clash with Mozambique on January 22nd, the final Group B match of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
While acknowledging the “better” performance against Egypt compared to the opening defeat against Cape Verde, Odoi emphasized the need for further improvement to secure qualification.
“There were some improvements from the first and second game, and hopefully, we keep growing and performing better,” Dennis Odoi stated at the pre-match press conference. He identified areas of progress like increased compactness in the second game but acknowledged the need for better discipline in dealing with offsides.
Victory against Mozambique is the only path to the Round of 16 for the Black Stars, currently third in the group with a solitary point. The pressure is immense, but Odoi expressed faith in the team’s potential.
“It’s important for us,” Odoi said. “We have to take it game by game, analyze the mistakes, and come back stronger. We have a good squad, and I believe if we put everything together, we can do well.”
Ghana’s performance against Egypt offered glimpses of their attacking prowess, but defensive lapses cost them the win. Odoi’s call for improved focus and discipline will be crucial if they are to overcome Mozambique and keep their Africa Cup of Nations dream alive.
