Ghana bids farewell to late footballer Christian Atsu

High ranking members of government, the media,  the clergy, the football fraternity, family and loved ones were present at the forecourt of the State House to pay their last respect to Christian Atsu on 17th March 2023.

In attendance was His excellency Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo, Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bahamian, Honorable Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif  and former president Honorable John Mahama.

Present at the gathering was the wife of the late footballer Marie Claire Rupo together with their three kids. Hon. Sports  minister Mustapha Ussif described Atsu as very humble.

Atsu remained humble despite experience great success. He was cheerful and loving”

Also present at the gathering was Samuel Osei Kuffour, Yaw Preko, John Paintsil, Sulley Muntari, Haminu Dramani and other ex-players of the national team

Marie Claire Rupo in an emotional tribute expressed her undying love for Atsu.

Lying before me today is the mortal remains of a beloved father and husband. I knew little that morning that God is going to call you home. In life, I loved you dearly. In death I do same. It breaks my heart to lose you,” she said while reading the tribute.

You did not go alone for part of me went with you. Your love is still my guide, and though I cannot see you, you are always so full of life.”

You are never really gone as part of you is within them. You are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure. But as you always say, God wins. In love, your wife.”

New Black Stars coach Chris Hughton and assistant George Boateng were also spotted at the ceremony.

Atsu tragically passed away during the massive earthquake in Turkey. He earned over 60 caps for Ghana at international level.
