Newcastle agree £13m fee with Brighton for Dan Burn

Newcastle have agreed a fee of £13m with Brighton for Dan Burn.

The Magpies had seen two bids for Burn rejected by the Seagulls, but they’ve now been given permission to discuss personal terms after raising their offer.

The 29-year-old will now travel to the North East to undergo a medical, per multiple reports, having been identified as one of Eddie Howe’s primary defensive transfer targets.

Diego Carlos and Sven Botman are just two of a number of players who Newcastle had hoped to sign, with the former particularly close to joining from Sevilla at one point. However, having requested permission to speak to Newcastle, the Brazilian then declared he was happy to stay in Spain, with a move subsequently ruled out by their director of football Monchi.

Those setbacks haven’t deterred Newcastle in their attempts to strengthen their squad, with the club simultaneously working on dozens of deals.

Lyon midfielder Bruno Guimaraes is the most high profile player that the club have targeted, and he looks set to add some much needed quality to central midfield after agreeing personal terms on a five-year deal.

Guimaraes’ transfer could end up costing Newcastle €52m, and barring any last-minute hitches, he’ll follow in the footsteps of Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood – both of whom have already completed moves from Atletico Madrid and Burnley respectively.

As far as Burn goes, the move to Newcastle gives him the opportunity to return to his native North East, and he’s likely to slot into the heart of defence alongside captain Jamaal Lascelles.

He joins Newcastle’s fight for survival, leaving behind a successful season for Brighton under the guidance of Graham Potter. Albion have sampled defeat in just four of their 22 Premier League outings, owing much to the versatility and performance levels of Burn.
