Red Bull Salzburg rule out sale of Leeds target Brenden Aaronson

Brenden Aaronson will not be leaving Red Bull Salzburg this January, a club spokesperson has told 90min.

The United States international has proven a hit in Austria since joining from MLS side Philadelphia Union in January 2021, with ten goals and 12 assists in 51 appearances for Salzburg across all competitions so far – including two goals and an assist in UEFA Champions League play.

Aaronson has also hit the ground running at international level with five goals and four assists in his first 15 USMNT caps.

So good has his form been since moving to Europe that Aaronson has appeared on the radar of Leeds United and legendary coach Marcelo Bielsa. Earlier this week, the Whites reportedly had a bid of just over $20m (£14.7m) rejected for the 21-year-old forward.

90min contacted Salzburg for comment on the matter. Though the Austrian champions didn’t offer a specific statement, they did point to the fact that sporting director Christoph Freund has ruled out the sale of any regular starters from Matthias Jaissle’s squad in the current transfer window.

Aaronson himself could be further motivated to remain with Salzburg a while longer given Die Roten Bullen finished above Sevilla and Wolfsburg in Champions League Group G, qualifying for the competition’s round of 16 – where they’ll face Bayern Munich – for the first time in club history.

Domestically, Salzburg are 14 points clear of Sturm Graz at the top of the Austrian Bundesliga table.
