2023 African Games: Nigeria Stumbles Against Uganda, Senegal Edges Past South Sudan

Nigeria

The Flying Eagles of Nigeria suffered a surprising 2-1 defeat against the Hippos of Uganda in their opening match of the 2023 African Games at the Accra Sports Stadium on Thursday night.

Uganda took the lead in the 34th minute through Kiza Usman, sending shockwaves through the Nigerian camp. However, Nigeria responded swiftly, with Sodiq Isiyaka equalizing just three minutes later.

Despite the early fightback, Uganda did not back down. They maintained pressure and secured the win thanks to Ivan Irinimbabaz’s goal in the 81st minute.

This result leaves Nigeria needing a strong performance in their next game to stay in contention for the top spot in the group.

In the other Group B fixture played earlier on Thursday, Senegal secured a narrow 1-0 victory over South Sudan. Mamadou Lamine Sadio’s first-half goal proved to be the difference maker.

Senegal will look to build on their win when they face Uganda on March 11, while Nigeria will aim to bounce back against South Sudan on the same day. The group stage promises to be an exciting battle for qualification to the knockout stages.
